Extra bin collections have been triggered by the city council to clear the post-Christmas backlog.

Many streets in Ashton-on-Ribble were approaching a month since recycling bins had been collected.

Blog Preston reported on Thursday how furious residents across streets in the Tulketh area had been left with overflowing yellow-lidded recycling bins filled with plastic and glass.

Preston City Council blamed ‘vehicle issues’ in a statement in response – but never explained what these were when asked.

Bin crews were spotted in the Shelley Road area during Friday morning making collections.

The additional collections are due to take place throughout Saturday.

A statement from the city council said: “Extra crews have been out today collecting many of the bins which were missed earlier in the week.

“If your bin has been missed, please leave it out at the kerbside. Crews will be out on Saturday and will endeavour to empty as many as possible.”

In September last year, the city council launched a campaign to encourage the city’s residents to recycle and encouraging people to put the right items in the correct coloured bin.
