Pakistan successfully launched its first domestically-produced observation satellite, PRSC-EO1, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northern China on Friday. The launch marks a significant milestone for the country’s space programme, led by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

The PRSC-EO1 satellite is equipped with electro-optical sensors designed to collect data and imagery of the Earth’s surface by measuring reflected sunlight and emitted radiation. This capability will enhance Pakistan’s ability to monitor natural resources, respond to disasters, improve urban planning, and support agricultural development, according to a statement from SUPARCO.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed the launch as a testament to Pakistan’s growing expertise in space science and technology, saying, “Spearheaded by SUPARCO, this demonstrates our nation’s growing capabilities in space science and technology.”

The satellite was launched alongside two additional satellites, Tianlu-1 and Blue Carbon 1, using China’s Long March-2D carrier rocket, as confirmed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

The earth observation satellite market, currently valued at $5 billion, is experiencing rapid growth and is projected to surpass $8 billion by 2033, according to Novaspace. This expansion has prompted nations like the United States, China, and India to develop government and private satellite constellations. Earlier this month, Indian startup Pixxel launched the country’s first privately-built satellite constellation.

Pakistan’s successful launch places it among the growing number of countries advancing their presence in the commercial space industry.
