Police in Mumbai have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad in connection with a knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan last week. Khan, one of India’s biggest stars, was stabbed by an intruder at his home in an attack that shocked the nation. He is now recovering after undergoing surgery.

On Sunday, police confirmed that Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national, had been apprehended. Authorities added that he had been living in India illegally. However, Shehzad’s lawyer denied the allegations, asserting that he was not from Bangladesh.

The arrest took place in Thane, a district on the outskirts of Mumbai. Preliminary investigations suggest that Shehzad arrived in Mumbai around six months ago and worked for a housekeeping agency under a fake identity.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam revealed at a press conference that police believe Shehzad broke into Khan’s home with the intention of robbing him.

A Mumbai court has sent Shehzad to five-day police custody. His lawyer, Sandeep Shikhane, insisted that his client was being made a “scapegoat” and challenged the claims of his Bangladeshi nationality, stating that there was no documentary evidence to support the accusation.

The attack has garnered widespread attention across India, raising concerns about safety and security in Mumbai, the nation’s financial hub. Khan was stabbed six times, suffering several injuries, including one on the back of his neck.

Khan’s housekeeper, Eliyama Philip, who was in the child’s room with the nanny at the time, told police she saw a man’s shadow near the bathroom door. She described the attacker as holding a wooden object in one hand and a long blade in the other, demanding 10 million rupees ($115,477; £94,511) and warning them not to make noise.

A struggle ensued, during which Philip was injured. She reported that Khan and his wife rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion, and the attacker then struck Khan with the blade before fleeing.

On Friday, investigators detained and later released at least five other individuals for questioning in connection with the attack. Many were brought in after resembling the attacker, who was captured on CCTV leaving the building.
