Preston is awaking to 2025 and a series of flood warnings and flooded roads around the city.

The Environment Agency has flood warnings in force – meaning that flooding is expected – along the River Ribble from Samlesbury to Avenham Park railway bridge.

Preston Parkrun has been cancelled following an early course inspection as the Ribble laps at the side of the path in Avenham Park.

The run usually takes place on a Saturday but undertakes a special New Year’s Day run. A statement from organisers said: “We have just completed an early course inspection and we need to cancel today’s event. The river is lapping onto the path and levels are rising. Hopefully back on Saturday.”

Elsewhere there’s reports of London Road, A6, having deep water that is difficult for drivers to pass by the Capitol Centre.

In Fulwood there’s flooding on Andertons Way at the roundabout with Eastway.

Many rural roads around Preston are reported as impassable, especially around Catforth and between Goosnargh, Broughton and Longridge.

Police during New Year’s Eve closed Bilsborrow Lane at Inglewhite due to flooding.

A statement from Preston Police issued during New Year’s Eve stated: “If you do have to take the car out, we are asking you to take care when driving on the county’s motorway and road system tonight and into tomorrow morning.

“Please slow down and give yourself extra stopping distance There is flooding on many roads and we advise not to try and drive through deep areas of standing water as that could put you at risk of being stranded and damaging your vehicle.”

Elsewhere and a flood warning is in force across Ribchester where a number of brooks have burst their banks and properties have sandbags in place to prevent flooding.

Two flood warnings are in place covering the River Wyre between Garstang and Catterall.

A Met Office warning for heavy rain is in force until 9am on New Year’s Day, when it is then downgraded to a yellow weather warning for lighter rain until 11am.

A cold snap is then due with temperatures dropping away rapidly to be minus figures by the evening of New Year’s Day.
