Preston is braced for an icy weekend ahead as temperatures continue to remain barely above freezing.
The Met Office has a raft of weather warnings in place running from Friday (3 January) evening through until Sunday evening (5 January) evening.
Here’s what weather forecasters are currently predicting for the city and surrounding area over the weekend ahead and into the return to school runs and work on Monday (6 January) for many.

Friday (3 January)
9pm-12midnight – Three degrees and light rain expected as Friday comes to a close
Saturday (4 January)
Up until 6am – Icy showers get heavier throughout the night with it feeling like 0 degrees by morning
6am-9am – The showers start to ease and temperatures of two degrees, a warning of ice is in force until 10am.
9am-12noon – Sunny intervals begin and temperatures creep to three degrees
12noon-3pm – A sunny afternoon but it feels like it’s barely above freezing out there. A yellow weather warning for snow starts to come into force from this point.
3pm-6pm – It clouds over and temperatures start to head down to minus figures.
6pm-9pm – By 9pm the threat of snow or icy showers increases, with a 60 per cent chance of it by 9pm.
9pm-12midnight – If you’re out and about expect to be a mix of sleet and snow through overnight, and the amber warning of snow comes into force for Preston.
Sunday (5 January)
up until 6am – It’s likely we will see the heaviest snowfall during this period, awaking to snow on Sunday morning as temperatures fall to a feels-like temperature of -5 and the wind speed gets up to gusts of 35mph with a strong easterly.
6am-9am – A bitterly cold morning, wind speeds remaining at gusts of 35mph and temperatures barely above freezing
9am-12noon – With a feels-like temperature of -4 there’s a strong chance of further icy showers
12noon-3pm – The icy showers continue but the wind speed starts to drop off.
3pm-6pm – Wind gusts drop below 30mph for the first time in the day and there’s still due to be icy showers throughout the evening
6pm-12midnight – It warms up slightly, to three degrees and the amber weather warning for snow comes to an end.
Monday (6 January)
up until 6am – Another freezing night, feels-like temperatures of -3 and the gusts return but a North Westerly this time
6am-9am – A partly-cloudy morning with sunrise at 8.27am and the rest of the day looks like it is cloudy with the odd icy shower. Temperatures remain feeling-like -2 to -3.
