Trying not to slip on black ice, de-icing the car and looking out across snowy rooftops have been part of this first full week of January in Preston.
Since Sunday the city has been held in an icy grip with temperatures barely getting above freezing.
There’s a few more days to endure before the big thaw comes.

The Met Office has yellow weather warnings in force for more snow and ice, but these are not stretching as far as Preston as it stands although the city was not covered by one on Wednesday night into Thursday morning and still saw a new coating of snow.
As we head into the weekend here’s how the forecast looks for the next few days and when it’s due to get a bit warmer…
Thursday (9 January)
9pm-12midnight – We remain stuck at -4 degrees and another clear night, so those icy patches will be, well, icy in the morning
Friday (10 January)
12midnight-6am – Temperatures fall to -5 and by the time you sling your legs out of bed if on an early start then it feels like -8
6am-9am – A brightening start and there’s no wind expected
9am-12noon – Bright winter sunshine and we warm up to 1 degree by lunchtime but it still feels like -2
12noon-3pm – A lovely bright afternoon and we hit highs of 2 degrees. Tropical.
3pm-6pm – Temperatures drop away again after sunset (at 4.13pm) and it’s another night in minus figures
6pm-12midnight – Feels-like -5 degrees and the wind starts to get up on another clear night
Saturday (11 January)
12midnight-6am – Continues to be -2 degrees and there’s a very slight easterly breeze
6am-9am – Another bright, sunny, winter day
9am-12noon- Highs of two degrees are reached
12noon-3pm – Starts to cloud over a bit, and wind speed which is a south easterly picks up
3pm-6pm – Back to -1 after sunset and feels-like -3
6pm-12midnight – Another freezing night, but not quite as cold, only feels like -3
Sunday (12 January)
12midnight-6am – It goes to freezing point overnight and it is a cloudy start ahead of sunrise
6am-9am – Sunrise at 8.23am and for the first morning in a while we’re going above freezing between 9am and lunchtime
9am-12noon – Wind speed gets up and there’s sunny intervals as temperatures rocket to 3 degrees
12noon-3pm – A high of 4 degrees and gusts of up to 20mph keep it feeling barely above freezing
3pm-6pm – A cloudy afternoon and the feels-like temperature drops back to -1
6pm-12midnight – A milder evening, staying at three degrees
Monday (13 January)
12midnight-6am – The big thaw is definitely on, temperatures stay at 3 to 4 degrees overnight
6am-9am – For the school run and commute then gusts of up to 30mph and temperatures at up to 5 degrees on an overcast morning
