Quebec drivers face up to $360 in fines this winter for improper snow removal

With winter in full swing and significant snowfalls across Quebec, drivers are reminded to take extra precautions when preparing their vehicles for the road. Failing to remove snow and ice from your car can not only jeopardize safety but also result in steep fines.

According to the the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) website, operating a vehicle with obstructed windows, or a “mobile igloo,” is strictly prohibited and can lead to fines ranging from $100 to $200, plus additional costs.

Beyond obstructed windows and windshields, it is also prohibited to drive a vehicle covered in snow, ice or any other material that’s likely to come loose and pose a danger to other road users. The consequences? A fine of $60 to $100, plus tax.

If you get slapped with both offences, fines can amount to more than $300. Plus, another fine can be added for a failure to adapt your driving. The latter is directly linked to weather and road conditions and can result in a penalty of $60, as well as two demerit points.

Officers also have the right to demand that you immediately clean or clear the obstructed surfaces before driving away.

In order to stay safe (and not break the bank), the SAAQ recommends equipping yourself with a proper winter driving kit, which includes a snow brush, ice scraper, windshield washer fluid and shovel, and keeping it in your vehicle. Some driving schools even offer snow and ice driving lessons for anyone who wants to improve their winter driving skills.

So, the next time you’re in a hurry and find yourself tempted to skip the cleanup and get on your way, you might want to think twice. Unlike the snow, it’s not something you should brush off.
