The Weeknd has stepped up with a generous $1 million donation to assist with wildfire relief efforts in California.
The global music icon’s funds will be distributed across several organisations, including the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, GoFundMe’sWildfire Relief Fund and the LA Regional Food Bank in partnership with World Food Program USA and The Weeknd’s XO Humanitarian Fund.
The donations are meant to support firefighters and efforts to help displaced residents in the wake of catastrophic blazes across the city, the most devastating of which were the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire.
The news comes on the heels of The Weeknd postponing a planned album release on January 24 for “Hurry Up Tomorrow” and subsequent concert at the famed Rose Bowl stadium.
The stadium concert, which was set for Jan. 25 in Pasadena, Calif., had been billed as a unique experience with a stage that took over the entire floor of the stadium.
The move was well received in the wake of such tragedy, and it would have been impossible for The Weeknd to take the stage just miles from devastation while performing the lead single from that album, titled “Dancing in the Flames.”
The music superstar is the latest in a line of high-profile celebrities that have donated to relief efforts in recent days. Beyoncé donated $2.5 million and delayed a high-profile Jan. 14 announcement,Jamie Lee Curtis and filmmaker husband Christopher Guest donated $1 million, Eva Longoria offered up $1 million, Leonard DiCaprio committed $1 million in partnership with his his Re:wild organization and Taylor Swift donated an unknown sum to a variety of organizations, to name a few.
Meanwhile, Disney donated $15 million and Warner Bros. Discovery committed $15 million for relief efforts while Amazon, Comcast and Netflix directed $10 million apiece and Sony pledged an additional $5 million. Paramount Global and Fox Corp added $1 million. YouTube and Google announced that the companies had committed $15 million in addition to opening up studio space for creators that have been impacted by the disaster.
