President Donald Trump has reignited interest in acquiring Greenland, expressing confidence that the United States will ultimately gain control of the autonomous Danish territory.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump declared, “I think we’re going to have it,” adding that Greenland’s 57,000 residents “want to be with us.”

Trump’s comments follow reports of a fiery phone exchange with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who has consistently rejected the idea of selling Greenland. During the call, Frederiksen reportedly insisted that Greenland “belongs to the Greenlanders” and that only the island’s residents could decide its future.

The president first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, citing its strategic importance and untapped natural resources. He has since called US control of the territory an “absolute necessity” for global security, framing the acquisition as critical for “freedom of the world.”

“I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it,” Trump said, adding that denying US efforts to acquire the island would be “a very unfriendly act.” He argued that only the United States could guarantee Greenland’s freedom and global security, asserting, “It has nothing to do with the United States other than that we’re the one that can provide the freedom. They can’t.”

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has rejected the notion of a sale, emphasising that decisions about the territory are “Greenland’s business.” However, Egede has expressed openness to strengthening defense and mining partnerships with the United States.

Denmark has also rebuffed Trump’s ambitions. Frederiksen reiterated earlier this month that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders” and reaffirmed her stance during what European officials described as a “horrendous” 45-minute call with Trump. Reports suggest the Danish government has held emergency high-level meetings in response to the renewed interest.

Local residents have voiced strong opposition to Trump’s comments. A fishing boat captain from the Kapisillit settlement said, “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders,” while church elder Kaaleeraq Ringsted described the president’s remarks as “not acceptable.”

Greenland holds significant strategic importance, lying along the shortest route between North America and Europe. It is also home to a key US military space facility. Recent interest in the territory has been fueled by its rich natural resources, including rare earth minerals, uranium, and iron, which are becoming increasingly valuable globally.

While Greenland has extensive autonomy, it remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Many Greenlanders support eventual independence, which could reshape their future relationship with the US.
