Where is hot in March: The best countries and destinations

The Caribbean, Australia and Dubai are renowned for their hot weather throughout the year, but there are plenty of other options to consider this March. Central and South America experience very warm weather in March, as does Africa & Egypt.

1. San Juan, Puerto Rico

  • Average temperature in March: 26°C

Puerto Rico is a dreamlike destination for many. With crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, vibrant history, and lively culture, its capital, San Juan, really is a paradise.

Temperatures reach about 26°C on average during March, making it one of the warmest islands in the Caribbean. March also sits in the dry season, so it’s a popular time to visit. Despite it being peak season, you shouldn't be deterred. You can easily escape the crowds by exploring the lush El Yunque National Rainforest or discovering the many secret coves along the coast.

Overall, Puerto Rico is a once-in-a-lifetime vacation destination. It's the kind of bucket list trip that is perfect for anyone looking to find somewhere hot in March to visit.

2. Bali

Bali is an incredible place to enjoy hot weather in March. Fly into Denpasar and discover why this island is the perfect spot for rest, relaxation, and sunshine.

Expect plenty of heat during your stay, as the daytime temperatures usually stay in the high 20s throughout March. March also sits at the very end of the rainy season, which means you can expect an odd cloudy or rainy day. But why visit Bali if the weather isn't guaranteed to be sunny?

For one, March is just before the tourist season starts to kick off. It's also a great time of year for amateur surfers looking to build their skills by surfing in calmer swells around the island.

A trip to Bali is perfect to get away, relax, and maybe even indulge in a bit of light yoga or meditation.

3. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand is incredibly picturesque. The city's main allure is its majestic Old City, a compact complex of temples and other stunning structures surrounded by an ancient moat.

The city was the historic capital of the old Lanna Kingdom until 1558 and it's home to dozens of beautiful Buddhist temples which highlight the area's diverse history. Another major draw of any Chiang Mai trip is the food.

You absolutely must try the local delicacies, such as khao soi (a curried, coconutty noodle soup) and sai ua (a local sausage spiced with lemongrass, chilli and kefir lime leaves). The city is awash with affordable restaurants, plus its daily markets are the ideal places to sample some authentic street food. Not to forget, March happens to be one of the warmest times of year to visit.

4. The Maldives

  • Average temperature in March: 28°C

The iconic white-sand atolls of the Maldives are quintessential paradises. Not just a place to relax in luxury resorts, the country is also home to hundreds of different species of marine life which you'll have plenty of opportunities to see. March is the perfect time of year to visit for this as the water is crystal-clear and the temperature sits at a balmy 28°C most days.

Snorkel or scuba with manta rays and sea turtles in Baa Atoll — a UNESCO World Biosphere. Or visit incredible underwater wrecks. You can also simply sit back and relax on stunning white sand beaches, basking in the glorious heat.

There are hundreds of islands to choose between for your Maldives getaway, with something to suit all budgets.

5. Medellin, Colombia

  • Average temperature in March: 22°C

Want to know where is it hot in March in South America Look no further than Medellin: Colombia's second city where the pleasant climate has gained it the nickname 'The City of Eternal Spring'.

It's ideal for a unique city break with an eclectic history, lush green spaces and a lively local nightlife scene (think salsa!). Average daily temperature sit in the low 20s in March, providing the ideal conditions for sightseeing. Take a guided street art tour around Comuna 13: once the city's most dangerous neighbourhood. You can also stroll through the foliage at the Medellin Botanical Gardens or visit a nearby coffee farm.

And on those days when the thermometer soars closer to 22°C? Cool off by dipping into one or more of Medellin's amazing museums. Marvel ancient Colombian treasures in the Museum of Antiquity or swot up on the city's more recent history at the Casa Museo Pablo Escobar.

For a mix of city exploration and beach time, split your time in Colombia between Medellin and Cartagena on its Caribbean coast.

6. Miami, USA

Sun-drenched hotels, boasting vibrant colours and unique designs, stand fronted by rows of majestic palm trees planted a few metres apart, creating an inviting, tropical atmosphere.
  • Average temperature in March: 23°C

Where better to take a break from the cold in March than Miami? This incredible port city at the tip of Florida offers a heavenly mix of sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife, richly diverse local communities, and a lot of fun in the sun. March happens to be when things start to heat up again (although even in January temperatures are still normally around 20°C).

No trip to Miami would be complete without visiting the iconic South Beach. It's home to the rich, famous and everyone else who wants to make the most of the glorious weather. For anyone looking to go somewhere a bit less popular, head to the quieter spots of Homestead, Bayfront Park or Key Biscayne.

You should also plan a trip to the wild and wonderful Everglades National Park for a chance to encounter alligators, panthers and manatees. And don't forget to try the iconic Cuban sandwich (Pan Cubano): a staple of Miami's Cuban community.

7. Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is one of the most incredible places to visit in a country which is not short of stunning beaches. Plus, March just so happens to be one of the warmest months — with temperatures often soaring into the 20s during the day. It's also a month packed with amazing events, including the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

With a breathtaking coastline, a beautiful historic city centre, amazing cafe scene and lush botanical gardens, Melbourne really is the ultimate March destination. You can even rent a car and explore the nearby Great Ocean Road that's dotted with beaches and striking natural wonders like the 12 Apostles rock formations.

8. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Average temperature in March: 27°C

Brazil is another South American gem where it's warm in March. And if Rio de Janeiro has been on your travel wishlist forever, now is the time to make the trip. This is one of the city's hottest months, making it ideal for a mix of city exploring and lazy beach days.

As well as ticking off hot spots like the monumental Christ the Redeemer statue and Copacabana Beach, you'll have plenty of other things to do. Make the most of the warm climate by spending time outdoors in Parque Lage (part of the city's Botanical Gardens). Or take a dip in refreshing waterfalls while hiking in the Tijuca National Park.

Fitting in plenty of beach time is essential on a March getaway to Rio. Lively Ipanema Beach is perfect for a sunset stroll or cocktail. If you're a surfer, check out Arpoador or Prainha beaches for fantastic waves and lush tropical backdrops.

9. Palm Springs, USA

Average temperature in March: 19°C

It might seem cliched but Palm Springs really is a great destination for a spring break. Tucked away in California's Coachella Valley, the vibrant oasis offers a striking balance of desert adventures and cosmopolitan city vibes.

Temperatures in March often rise into the mid 20s, giving you ample excuses to spend a day or two by the pool in your hotel. On cooler days, there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied. Hiking in Palm Springs's Indian Canyons is a must, with many trails leading you to waterfalls where you can enjoy a refreshing mid-walk swim.

You could also rent a car and explore the rest of the valley. If you're visiting over a weekend, I'd definitely recommend a Sunday morning trip to the Indio Certified Farmers Market, where you can pick up everything from tropical fruits to artisan treats.

10. Hurghada, Egypt

Average temperature in March: 20°C

If you don't want to fly too far for guaranteed sunshine, Egypt is an awesome option. Hurghada on the Red Sea coast is a five hour flight from the UK and it's got hotels to suit all — from sweeping golf resorts to smaller boutique options.

Many of Hurghada's resorts sit right on the coast and offer private beach areas where you can laze around all day in the sun. If you want a dose of culture during your visit, catch a taxi (they're cheap) into Hurghada town itself where you can admire the beautiful Al-Mina Mosque or pick up souvenirs at El Dahar Bazar.

There are also plenty of day trip options from Hurghada for the more adventurous among you. Head out into the desert for incredible star-gazing. Or book a tour to the pyramids in Giza. The latter is a pretty long day trip (around 10 hours) but worth it if you want to tick off one of the Ancient Wonders of the World.

Recommendation ranking of cities:

Our recommendation ranking of where to go is calculated based on the presented five factors: average flight prices, average hotel prices, average, high temperatures, average low temperatures, and average precipitation. Flight prices, hotel prices, and precipitation constitute inverse factors, meaning the lower the better. All factors are equally weighted.

From the ranked destination lists, destination exclusions may have been applied in cases of insufficient data or according to the official travel advisory at the time when the data analysis was conducted.

Flight and hotel prices:

Average prices are estimated from KAYAK internal data from the search period ‘2024/10/03 to 2025/01/03’ for the travel period ‘2024/10/03 to 2025/01/03.'. Flight prices include economy class return trips for one traveller, and hotel prices represent the nightly rates for a standard double room for hotels with three stars or below. Price insights may vary depending on the exact departure airport and over time as travel dates are approaching.

Weather (monthly average, high and low temperatures, and average precipitation):

Weather data is pulled from a third-party site, Weatherbase, and has not been verified by KAYAK. Monthly average temperature and precipitation data are based on historical insights from the past 102 years. Weatherbase data is updated in real-time from the US Census Bureau and other databases worldwide.
