Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer has launched a new political party, the Trumpet of Patriots, which he says is directly inspired by US President Donald Trump. The announcement comes just months ahead of Australia’s upcoming federal election.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Palmer declared that his party would work to “drain the swamp” in Canberra, echoing Trump’s call to reduce the size of government. “We think Donald Trump’s been very effective in reducing public expenditure,” Palmer stated.
The Trumpet of Patriots has positioned itself on a right-wing platform, opposing mass immigration and recognising only two genders—stances that align with Trump’s policies. Palmer said the party would contest all 150 seats in the lower house, as well as the Senate, in the upcoming election.
Palmer, who is ranked as Australia’s 18th richest person with a net worth of $2.1 billion, previously led the United Australia Party (UAP) and served as a lawmaker in the lower house from 2013 to 2016. Despite spending A$100 million ($63.52 million) on UAP’s campaign in the last federal election, the party secured only a single seat in the Senate.
Palmer was unable to register UAP in time for this year’s election, which must be held by May. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has yet to set an official date, though speculation suggests it could be as early as March, following a recent interest rate cut that may provide a boost to the government amid cost-of-living concerns.
