A FAN favorite warehouse retailer is set to open four more stores in the same state in a move that could see the chain rival Costco.

BJ’s Wholesale Club is set to spend mullions of dollars to expand its influence in a huge US state in the coming year.

The chain is planning to build the stores in Texas, with all of the spots located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The stores will be found in Fort Worth, Forney, Waxahachie, and Grand Prairie.

This will mark BJ’s first appearance in the state, with each location costing a reported $9.5million and spanning over 106,000sq ft.

The stores have varying planned dates for opening.

Construction on the Fort Worth project is set for June and expected to be completed for February next year.

The Waxahachie location could follow the same timeline.

The Grand Prairie and Forney stores are also expected to be completed in January 2026.

As of February 2025, there are 43 Costco locations in Texas.

The expansion comes as BJ’s continues to report promising growth indicators.

Membership is on the rise for BJ’s, with their base rising 40% since 2018, and renewal rates have reached their highest point in club history

In addition, the warehouse retailer reached the 7.5-million-member milestone during the third quarter in 2024.

They are also coming off of strong quarterly earnings, and net sales reached almost $5 billion, marking a 3.4% increase year over year.

NOT OK

In a separate incident, a BJ’s Wholesale member has lashed out at the retailer after two customers didn’t appear to follow a particular checkout policy.

The member was less than impressed over what had played out in the store, which he said was busy.

Michael, a veteran of the US Marine Corps, called out the shoppers who had apparently had carts packed with dozens of items but were using the self-checkout.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

He claimed that the shoppers took more than 30 minutes to scan their items, according to an X thread.

This was despite the fact they used lanes reserved for shoppers with a maximum of 20 goods.

Michael also revealed how the line was snaking back.

He claimed it was 50 meters long.

The furious shopper said he filed a complaint but seemed to be shocked by the worker’s reply.

He claimed the staffer “ignored” him.

The U.S. Sun has approached BJ’s Wholesale for comment.
