Greece has declared a state of emergency on the popular tourist island of Santorini following a series of earthquakes that have shaken the region this week. More than 10,000 residents and workers have been evacuated as authorities warn of ongoing seismic activity and potential landslides.

Since Sunday, hundreds of tremors have been recorded in the sea between Santorini and the nearby island of Amorgos. The strongest quake, measuring 5.2 in magnitude, struck on Wednesday night. Officials have since shut down schools, dispatched rescue teams, and advised residents to stay away from ports and indoor gatherings due to safety concerns.

The Greek Army, fire service, and police have all been deployed to Santorini to assist with emergency operations. The Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry announced that the state of emergency will remain in effect until March 3 to address the needs of the population and mitigate the impact of the ongoing seismic activity.

Although Greece is one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone countries, seismologists have described the current level of seismic activity as unprecedented. They caution that the tremors could continue for weeks or even months.

Santorini, known for its dramatic cliffs and white-washed buildings, was shaped by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history around 1600 BC. The island’s geological history makes it particularly vulnerable to seismic events, raising concerns about the potential for further disruptions.
