MTN Nigeria has apologised for its recent 200% increase in the price of its 15GB weekly data bundle, calling the hike a mistake. However, despite the apology, the telecommunications provider has further raised the price and reclassified the bundle.
The company initially increased the cost of the 15GB weekly plan from N2,000 to N6,000 as part of a broader tariff adjustment. Following public backlash, MTN issued a statement acknowledging the error.
“To our 15G digital bundle lovers, you dey vex. We know,” the statement read in a mix of English and Nigerian Pidgin. “We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”
MTN also appealed to customers, urging them to “forgive and forget” during the season of love.
MTN said, “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much. Let’s continue our relationship. Thank you for your understanding.”
Despite its admission of error, checks revealed that MTN further increased the price of the 15GB plan to N6,500. The company also reclassified the bundle from weekly to monthly, effectively altering its value proposition for customers.
MTN’s price adjustments come after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a request from telecommunications firms to raise tariffs—the first official review since 2013. However, the company proceeded with the hike despite a directive from the House of Representatives instructing the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to suspend the 50% tariff increase approval.
The conflicting actions have sparked further concerns among subscribers, with many questioning MTN’s pricing policies and commitment to customer satisfaction.
