Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president and a towering figure in its fight for independence, has passed away at the age of 95.

The announcement was made by the country’s current leader, President Nangolo Mbumba, who expressed “utmost sorrow and sadness” over the loss.

Nujoma, who had been hospitalised for the past three weeks due to an undisclosed illness, “could not recover,” President Mbumba said.

“He inspired us to rise to our feet and to become masters of this vast land of our ancestors,” Mbumba added, praising Nujoma’s exceptional service to the Namibian people.

Nujoma played a pivotal role in Namibia’s liberation movement. In the 1960s, he helped found the South West People’s Organisation (Swapo), which led the long struggle against South African rule. His efforts culminated in Namibia gaining independence in 1990.

Following independence, Nujoma became the nation’s first president, serving for 15 years until 2005. Even after stepping down as head of state, he continued to lead the ruling Swapo party until his retirement from politics in 2007.

Under his leadership, Namibia made significant strides in nation-building and economic development while navigating the challenges of post-colonial governance.

Nujoma is remembered as a revolutionary leader who dedicated his life to the liberation and development of his country.

Tributes have poured in from across the region and the world, celebrating his legacy as a statesman and freedom fighter.
