A midsize business jet skidded off the runway while landing at Scottsdale Municipal Airport on Monday, crashing into a parked jet and killing at least one person, authorities confirmed.
Dave Folio, a spokesperson for the Scottsdale Fire Department, stated that four other individuals were injured in the crash. Three of the injured were taken to area hospitals for treatment, while one person remained trapped inside the wreckage as first responders worked to free them. Officials have not yet determined what caused the jet to veer off the runway.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the aircraft involved as a Learjet 35A, which went off course and collided with a parked Gulfstream g200 jet. The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the factors that led to the crash.
This accident comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over air safety in the United States. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is already investigating three other fatal crashes in recent weeks.
These include a midair collision in Washington, DC, between a passenger jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter that killed 67 people, a medical jet crash in Philadelphia that claimed seven lives, and a plane crash in Alaska that left 10 people dead.
Authorities have not yet released further details on the Scottsdale crash as investigations continue.
