Pope Francis has denounced the killing of children in wars across the world, declaring that “nothing is worth the life of a child.” Speaking at a Vatican summit on Monday, the pontiff condemned the loss of young lives in conflict zones, though he did not mention any specific war.

“What we have tragically seen almost every day in recent times, namely children dying beneath bombs … is unacceptable,” said the pontiff. “To kill children is to deny the future.”

The Vatican hosted a one-day conference on children’s rights, bringing together global leaders, including Queen Rania of Jordan, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and former Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri. The event took place against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts such as Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the war in Ukraine, both of which the pope has previously criticised.

Pope Francis has increasingly voiced concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling it “very serious and shameful” in a recent address. He also highlighted the plight of displaced children, citing United Nations estimates that around 38 million children have been forced from their homes due to violence.

“We are here today to say that we do not want this to become the new normal,” said the pope. “We refuse to get used to it.”

In his speech, the pope also touched on immigration, expressing deep concern for undocumented children at the US-Mexico border. He described them as the “first victims of that exodus of despair and hope” as thousands seek a better life in the United States.

His remarks reinforce the Vatican’s call for global leaders to prioritize the protection of children and work towards peaceful resolutions in conflict zones.
