Storied Scottish garage rockers The Primevals are heading to Preston this weekend for a gig at The Ferret.

The band will play the Fylde Road venue tomorrow (Saturday 15 February) in support of their new single, I’m The Man-Wulf.

The Primevals are long-time favourites of comedian Stewart Lee, who commissioned the band to write the song for his current nationwide tour, Stewart Lee vs The Man-Wulf.

Lee also picked The Primevals for a series of concerts he curated in London last summer, and has described the band as “immortal and imperious, laying widescreen Americana and free jazz flavoured freakouts over a durable garage punk template.”

Local promoter Tuff Life Boogie has put together the line-up for the occasion, notably featuring a rare foray south of the border from another veteran Glasgow outfit, James King and The Lonewolves.

The Lonewolves have a notorious history dating back to the early 1980s when they were feted by music business legend Alan Horne. The band recorded for the Swamplands label that Horne set up following his success with Postcard Records, home of early releases from Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Josef K and the Go Betweens.

Expect to hear selections from last year’s well-received Mortality Arcade LP, which combined country and western melodies with a steely 1970s proto punk vibe at times reminiscent of Television and Pere Ubu.

Ajay Saggar – honorary Prestonian multi-tasker now based in Amsterdam – also features on the bill, in his latest solo psychedelic guise as Bhajan Bhoy. Ajay’s first foray into music was in the late 80s when he played bass in Dandelion Adventure. Still one of Preston’s most successful acts, the band list a John Peel session and a London headline show supported by an early incarnation of Blur as two of their achievements.

Ajay has returned to Preston many times for shows since them, helming great acts such as Donkey, The Bent Moustache, King Champion Sounds, Deutsche Ashram and The Common Cold.

Prior to his performance at The Ferret, Ajay will appear at Action Records for a special free in-store event starting at 3pm. This will include a Q&A session with Steve Barker, the respected local DJ and host of underground music show On the Wire.

The line-up for the show at The Ferret is completed by the superb East Lancashire rock n roll quartet Walter Mitty’s Head and a new act from Yorkshire, Palace Thieves. Michael Fenton will DJ 60s RnB between the acts.

The Primevals, James King and The Lonewolves and Bhajan Bhoy plus Walter Mitty’s Head and Palace Thieves are on at The Ferret on Saturday 15 February from 6pm.

Tickets are £10 and available in person from Action Records in Church Street with no booking fee or online from the WeGotTickets website.
