Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as New York governor in 2021 amid a sexual misconduct scandal, has declared his candidacy for New York City mayor, aiming for a political comeback in this year’s election.
“Our city is in crisis,” Cuomo said in a 17-minute video posted on X, adding, “We need government to work. We need effective leadership.”
His announcement comes as current Mayor Eric Adams faces controversy over allegations that he agreed to assist the Trump administration with migrant raids in exchange for dropping a federal corruption case against him.
Cuomo, a three-term governor, resigned after a state-led investigation concluded that he had sexually harassed 11 women, including government employees. The report found he had made inappropriate comments, engaged in unwelcome touching, and kissed women without consent. At the time, President Joe Biden and several leading Democrats called for his resignation.
Despite these allegations, Cuomo maintains he never harassed anyone, though he apologised to those who may have felt uncomfortable. His political downfall came a year after he was widely praised for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a 2022 report later revealed that his administration had concealed over 4,100 COVID-related nursing home deaths. Cuomo admitted to delays in reporting but denied any intentional cover-up.
Recent polls suggest Cuomo could become the frontrunner in the Democratic primary if he enters the race. He has already secured the backing of U.S. Congressman Ritchie Torres, who praised his governance skills.
“Andrew Cuomo has the competence to govern the city. He has the courage to stand up to extremist politics – both from the far left and far right,” Torres told the New York Post, adding, “We don’t need a Mr Nice Guy. We need a Mr Tough Guy.”
Cuomo’s supporters have launched a political action committee, Fix the City, aiming to raise $15 million for his campaign.
However, not everyone is in favour of his return to politics. Karen Hinton, a former Cuomo aide who accused him of sexual misconduct, expressed concerns about his potential election.
“New York City may elect a mayor who has been rightfully accused of sexual misconduct by several young women who worked for him in up-close positions,” she told the New York Post.
The Democratic primary is set for June, with the winner expected to easily defeat any Republican challenger in November.
Meanwhile, Mayor Adams remains embroiled in legal challenges. He denies allegations of fraud and bribery, and a federal judge has postponed his trial while deciding whether to dismiss the case. Despite facing corruption charges, Adams has refused to withdraw from the race.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Cuomo’s successor, recently stated she would not use her authority to remove Adams but would instead work to limit his powers.
With the Democratic primary approaching, Cuomo’s entry into the race signals a high-stakes contest, as New York City voters weigh leadership, controversy, and governance in their choice for mayor.
