Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has pledged to transform sports into a tool for job creation and wealth generation as renovation work commences at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti.

Governor Oyebanji reiterated his administration’s dedication to sports development, stating that it will no longer be viewed solely as a recreational activity but as a strategic avenue for empowering athletes and fostering economic growth.

Speaking during an inspection of the ongoing renovation of Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti on Friday, Oyebanji expressed concern over the poor training conditions faced by athletes. He assured them that the situation would soon change, as his government is determined to upgrade the stadium to international standards.

The Governor also revealed that his administration had awarded a contract worth over ₦7 billion for the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor sports hall, which is expected to be completed before the end of his tenure.

While reaffirming his commitment to providing an enabling environment for athletes, including modern facilities and training programme, Oyebanji urged them to remain focused and take advantage of the opportunities his administration is creating.

“I came here this morning in continuation of what we started yesterday just to look at what is happening at the stadium. I recall that I was here last year, I went round and I did not like what I saw, and I promised that we are going to revamp sports in Ekiti State.

“If you look at the six pillars of our administration, one of them is human capital development, that is where sport development is, and I made a promise that we will use sport as an avenue to create jobs and wealth. Sport will no longer be a recreational activity but a platform for sport lovers to make money, and we can only do that if we put in place structures and building blocks that will allow you to exhibit your potentials,” the Governor said.

The Technical Advisor on Sports Development, Dr (Mrs) Olusola Osetoba, commended the Governor’s vision and proactive efforts, highlighting the economic and employment benefits of prioritising sports in the state.

Also speaking, the Captain of Ekiti United Football Club, Makanjuola Ayodeji, expressed his appreciation for the Governor’s contributions to athletes’ welfare. He noted that since Oyebanji assumed office, they had experienced significant improvements, including salary increments, new uniforms, travel allowances, and bonuses.
