Grammy-nominated R&B artist Angie Stone has died at the age of 63 following a car accident in Alabama, her daughter, Diamond Stone, has confirmed.
In a Facebook post, Diamond wrote, “My mommy is gone.”
Reports indicate that Stone was fatally injured when the van she was travelling in overturned early on Saturday after a performance.
Stone, known for hits such as No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Wish I Didn’t Miss You, was a three-time Grammy nominee. She began her music career in the 1970s as a member of the female hip-hop trio The Sequence, which gained popularity with their song Funk You Up, reaching number 15 on Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles chart.
Her daughter, who performs under the name Ladi Diamond, said she was feeling “numb”, having earlier asked for prayers for her family while on the road.
A spokesperson for the singer told the BBC that her family had travelled to Montgomery, Alabama, and would release further details in due course.
Guy Todd Williams, also known as Rahiem of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, revealed that Stone was in the van with about nine other passengers at the time of the crash.
“She left her indelible mark on the music industry initially as a member of the legendary rap group Sequence,” Williams said, confirming that she was the only fatality.
Authorities in Montgomery have yet to provide official details regarding the accident.
Beyond music, Stone also ventured into film, making her debut in The Hot Chick (2002), starring Rob Schneider, Rachel McAdams, and Anna Faris. She later appeared in The Fighting Temptations (2003) alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyoncé.
