Their study aimed to discover if Western male attitudes to breasts — illustrated by the famous 1990s Wonderbra advert — is merely cultural.
A research team flew to quiz a remote Indonesian tribe in Western New Guinea.
The Dani women always went topless, until Western influence led to them covering up around 20 years ago
The team quizzed 40 older men about their attitudes to breasts when younger, and 40 males who grew up in a society where women keep them covered.
They were asked how often they touch their partner’s boobs and how turned on they got when they see naked breasts – and there was no difference in the age groups, the study by the University of Wroclaw in Poland found.
Spokesman Michal Stefanczy said: “What we can say is breasts are sexy — naturally so. Men like breasts.”
Psychology professor Steve Stewart-Williams commented: “I’ve heard people argue men’s love of breasts is an invention of Western culture.
“It’s always struck me as implausible — could it have randomly created a male obsession with women’s elbows or nostrils?”
