Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied access to the State House of Assembly on Wednesday, deepening the political crisis gripping the state.
In a widely circulated video, Fubara, flanked by members of the Tribal Council, lamented his inability to enter the legislative complex despite following due process.
“I’m here myself this morning to comply with the Supreme Court judgment. Before my arrival, I’ve already made several attempts by phone call to reach the Speaker and other members. I also did a letter personally, which was transmitted to the Honourable Speaker for this particular invitation,” Fubara said in the video.
However, upon reaching the Assembly gates, the governor was met with a firmly sealed entrance.
“It’s unfortunate that at the gates, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there’s no sign that anything is going to happen today,” he added.
Despite the blockade, he remained resolute, saying, “The reason why we’re doing this, I’ve always said it, is the interests of our people, which is the most important thing. Well, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. Maybe they’re working on their letter. I expect to hear from them maybe after this hour.”
The development comes shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasised the need for strict adherence to the rule of law as a means of achieving lasting peace and prosperity in Rivers State. Speaking at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, Tinubu addressed a delegation of political leaders from Rivers, stressing that respect for judicial rulings was essential to sustaining democracy and stability.
His remarks echoed a similar plea made on Monday while breaking his fast with governors, military chiefs, and political figures. At the time, Tinubu had advised Governor Fubara to adopt a humble approach to resolving the state’s political turmoil, urging him to “stoop to conquer” in the interest of peace and progress.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Tinubu called on Niger Delta leaders under the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) to mediate in the crisis by counselling Fubara towards a peaceful resolution. He urged all stakeholders to prioritise selflessness and unity in salvaging the political and economic future of Rivers State.
