Mushtaq Ahmed was shot dead on Thursday evening in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province bordering Afghanistan that has witnessed repeated incidents of sectarian violence.

According to police documents seen by AFP and a local police official, a man identified only as Ashfaq has been charged with Mushtaq’s murder.

The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute in a WhatsApp group. Mushtaq allegedly removed Ashfaq from the group following an argument, according to a statement by Mushtaq’s brother seen by AFP.

Both men had arranged to meet and reconcile, but Mushtaq’s brother alleges that Ashfaq arrived armed and opened fire, killing Mushtaq.

Ashfaq was allegedly motivated by anger “in reaction to removal from WhatsApp group,” the statement added.

The availability of firearms, the influence of tribal customs, and sometimes weak law enforcement are believed to contribute to the frequency of such violent incidents in the region.
