Renowned Nigerian Writer, Poet Mabel Segun Passes Away at 95

Mabel Segun, the celebrated Nigerian poet, writer, and advocate for children’s literature, has passed away at the age of 95.

Her family released a statement announcing her death, expressing gratitude to God for her remarkable life and legacy. Described as a versatile media personality who pursued excellence, the family noted that funeral arrangements would be communicated to the public shortly.

Born on February 13, 1930, in Ondo City, Mabel Segun had a distinguished career spanning literature, education, broadcasting, and sports. She attended the University of Ibadan, where she earned a degree in English, Latin, and History before becoming an influential teacher.

Mabel Segun’s literary contributions, particularly in children’s literature, earned her global recognition. Her debut book, My Father’s Daughter, published in 1965, became a widely used text in schools worldwide. Her works have been translated into various languages, including German and Greek.

In addition to her literary achievements, Mabel was a talented athlete, excelling in table tennis and badminton. A former table tennis champion, she was the first Nigerian woman to compete at a high level in the sport.

Throughout her career, Mabel received numerous awards, including the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation 1977 Artiste of the Year award and the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award in 2009 for lifetime achievements. She also founded key organisations such as the Children’s Literature Association of Nigeria and the Children’s Documentation and Research Centre in Ibadan.

Mabel Segun is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Femi Segun.
