Screen spotlight: What’s on in Preston cinemas 7 to 13 March

This Saturday is International Women’s Day, and as such, The Arc Cinema in Preston will be celebrating the day by putting on a special screening of Wicked, with all of the proceeds from the screening going to Women’s Aid UK. 

The Academy Awards were also on over the weekend, which means several new Oscar winners will be playing on screens across Preston this week, in addition to major new releases like Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, and Marching Powder, starring Danny Dyer.

Here are the unique listings for Preston’s local cinemas from Friday the 7th to Thursday the 13th of March.

One of Them Days

One of Them Days hit theaters across America in January, but it’s finally reach the UK this week. Starring SZA in her theatrical debut, the tragicomedy film has gotten largely positive reviews. However, it will only be playing in The Arc and Odeon, so if you want to see it, plan accordingly.

The Last Showgirl

The Last Showgirl stars Pamela Anderson in a touching drama about a 57-year-old showgirl whose show has just been cancelled after 30 years. The film was nominated for a BAFTA, but despite critical success, it has not received a widespread release. Fortunately, The Flower Bowl is playing the film all week.

September 5

September 5 received a limited release here in Preston early in February, but now it’s being brought to several screens around the city. The film follows the events of the Munich massacre of 1972, where an American sports broadcasting channel was involved in covering a developing hostage crisis at the Olympics. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, though it lost out to Anora.

The third entry in the series continues to prove popular, especially as it’s got something for the whole family. Following the famous bear from the Paddington stories by Michael Bond, things get tenser than ever for Paddington and company in this outing. The Arc continues to feature regular shows, while the Odeon is putting on a special Silver Screening of the film for older cinema-goers on Tuesday.

Julia Donaldson’s popular stories for children have been adapted into animated short features that are beloved by kids. So, if you need something to keep the younger kids and toddlers entertained, this is the perfect listing.

We Live in Time

We Live in Time came out at New Year’s, and for the last several weeks, it has been playing at all of the local cinemas. However, the theatrical release is slowing down, which means it may be the last chance to catch it before it leaves the theaters. Starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in a beautiful and heartbreaking story that engages with time in a unique way, this movie is a hidden gem.

Of the eight categories that Conclave was nominated for, it managed to win only one for Best Adapted Screenplay. Starring Ralph Fiennes and a slate of stunning actors, the movie has proven very popular with audiences, which is reflected in the decision from three of Preston’s local cinemas to feature the film prominently despite the movie being released in November of 2024.

Wicked is a film adaptation of the popular stage musical directed by John M. Chu. The film won two Oscars for the production design and costume design, which was well-earned looking at the stunning visuals throughout the film. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, it’s a powerful story of friendship and overcoming challenges, which makes it a great choice for The Arc’s pick to celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The 1991 action hit starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by James Cameron is back on the big screen this week at Vue. The film has proven to be one of the most defining sci-fi action hits in the genre, with groundbreaking CGI that allowed for the creation of stunning characters like the T-1000. 

The Wild Robot

The Wild Robot may not have won at the Academy Awards, but the achievement alone of this animated feature film being nominated for three separate categories is a testament of how strong a film this is. The Arc is featuring the movie prominently as the Kid’s Club pick for this weekend, while it returns for one day only at the Odeon on Tuesday. 

The Sloth Lane

The Sloth Lane is an animated children’s film from Australia that is part of a larger series called The Tales from Sanctuary City. While this is the fifth entry in the franchise, it’s not necessary to have seen the other movies, each of which highlights anthropomorphized versions of Australia’s unique array of wildlife.

Sarah & Duck On The Big Screen

Sarah & Duck is a popular animated series aimed at children aged 4 to 6. The special screening combines eight of the best episodes from the series and two sing-along songs to make this a special event for young fans of the show.

Giants of La Mancha

Giants of La Mancha has received very little in terms of marketing and publicity. It’s a modern-day adaptation of a Don Quixote story but reframed and reimagined to suit a younger audience. The result is a loud kids’ film with a lot going on, but it may prove popular with younger audiences. Thus far, critics have not been favorable.

Twiggy

Twiggy was a huge fashion icon who became a household name in the 1960s. Now, director Sadie Frost leads a documentary exploring her life and rise to prominence, with interviews of famous figures such as Dustin Hoffman, Paul McCartney and Joanna Lumley who describe her influence and prminence at the height of her fame and in the decades since.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games came out in 2012, starring Jennifer Lawrence. The film is based on the popular young adult book series by Suzanne Collins. Now, the film is returning to Odeon for a limited time with multiple shows this coming week.

Beauty and The Beast

Vue began playing a handful of the previously released live-action Disney films over the last month, and now, Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson, is returning for a limited time this weekend. The live-action film was released in 2017, and despite some changes from the original, it’s a captivating story of love which explores what it means to be a monster.

Anora

Anora had a surprisingly eventful Awards night, taking home a total of five Oscars. Generally, the film has not seen a wide release, and to date, it’s only managed to earn a little over $40 million at the global box office. The movie follows a young escort in a dark romantic comedy with mature themes.

Companion debuted a few weeks back and delivers a fresh take on the evil AI narrative that appears to be so prominent in Hollywood at present. Sophie Thatcher stars, and she is joined by Jack Quaid in this twisted thriller that genuinely subverts a developing genre. Well worth a watch, and with only Vue still playing the movie, there may not be much time left.

Julia Roberts stars in this film based on a true story of a woman who raises important concerns about industry in her small town. The film celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, which is why it’s being featured in both Vue and the Odeon.

Macbeth: David Tennant & Cush Jumbo

The wide release of the stageplay Macbeth, starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, was a few weeks ago, but for all those who missed it, Vue is running a couple of more screenings of the spectacular performance. The classic Shakespearian play has been adapted countless times down the years, but Tennant’s incredible stage presence brings the story to life in a whole new way. Well worth watching for fans of the cast or the story.

The Brutalist

The Brutalist is still playing around Preston on the back of having secured three Oscars. The film has received widespread praise for the incredible storytelling and the performance of leading actors like Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce.

Attack on Titan: The Last Attack

Tuesday

Attack on Titan is a popular anime series that has been running since 2013, and now, the story continues on the big screen. The film features an epic and tense story about a group of people who find themselves surrounded by hideous, monstrous giants. In order to keep them safe, a specially trained group of soldiers fights back with aerial equipment and melee weapons.

Memoir of a Snail

A stop motion film aimed at adults, Memoir of a Snail is dark, melancholic, and heartbreaking tale. The film is reminiscent of Coraline, though the stop motion animation adds further eeriness and surreal tones to the film. A weird and wonderful tale.

A Night With Janis Joplin, The Musical

Janis Joplin is a renowned musician who has been in the spotlight for decades. Now, an event cinema listing can transport audiences to a show featuring the incredibly talented woman without having to leave Preston. The show will be playing at both Odeon and Vue next Thursday.

A Real Pain

On the back of two BAFTA wins, A Real Pain also picked up another win at the Academy Awards over the weekend. The film explores tragedy, grief, and friendship in a visceral way that elicits intense emotion. It’s a wonderful film that is well worth watching, and is available only at the Odeon this week.
