A tragic accident occurred in the Egyptian Red Sea when a submarine sank approximately one kilometre off the coast of Hurghada, resulting in the deaths of six tourists and the rescue of 39 others.
The victims were all Russian nationals, while the survivors included tourists from Russia, Norway, Sweden, and India.
In November, another deadly incident took place in Hurghada when the tourist boat Sea Story sank, leaving 11 people dead or missing, including a British couple.
The cause of the submarine’s sinking remains under investigation, with unconfirmed reports from the Association of Tour Operators of Russia suggesting that the submarine collided with a reef, resulting in a loss of pressure at a depth of 20 metres (65 feet). The company’s website indicates the submarine typically operates at a maximum depth of 25 metres.
A survivor who had been on a previous submarine excursion reported never feeling unsafe during the trip. However, the company has since suspended all submarine excursions and ticket sales, and all other recreational submersible dives off the Hurghada coast have been cancelled.
