President Donald Trump said that he will be issuing a complete pardon of the late baseball player Pete Rose. The president also criticized Major League Baseball for never having the “courage or decency” to induct Rose into its Hall of Fame in his post on Truth Social late Friday.
The baseball legend, who is best known for his time with the Cincinnati Reds and nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” was banned from baseball for betting on games. He also served several months in prison for tax evasion. The all-time hit leader passed away last year at 83 years old.
“He never betted against himself, or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in baseball history, and won more games than anyone in sports history,” Trump wrote.
Trump said Rose was a “much better player” than many already in the Hall of Fame, and called on the league to award Rose the honor posthumously. (The Hall of Fame, which is closely tied to but distinct from MLB, generally does not honor players that have been banned from the game.)
This is the latest in a series of pardons that Trump has awarded since taking office.
