Acclaimed artist Sally Dyer is set to launch a new arts program at Chew’s Yard.
Preston-based Sally, who was a semi-finalist in Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year competition, kicks-off her new portrait painting workshop on Sunday 18 May.
The hands-on Heritage Portraits with Artist Sally Dyer session will see Sally helping participants discover the art of portrait painting and create an original A4 canvas acrylic painting of a loved one. No prior experience is necessary.
Since graduating, Sally’s practice has explored heritage. Her grandfather was one of the first West Indians to make a home for himself in Preston, with many of her works featuring his image.
Sally has also painted a portrait of 2017 Turner Prize Winner Lubaina Himid, who said about the work: “Sally understands what goes on under the surface. Very moving.”

Sally is extremely passionate about positive creative experiences, with a focus on the process being as important as the final outcome.
For the workshops, Sally will guide participants through the nuances of portraiture while talking with each person about the person they are painting and their significance within your life.
She will introduce a simple but effective technique that means drawing skills are not necessary and you can go straight into enjoying the journey of working with paint.
Participants will learn the basics of colour mixing, tonal value, light and shade, brush use and mark-making with acrylic paints to capture a person’s likeness.

Participants are asked to take along a head and shoulders photographic image – A4 size if possible – of a chosen family member or loved one. All media and materials will be provided.
Afterwards, there will be the chance to reflect on your achievements and insights with other workshop participants.
This workshop is suitable for ages 14 plus. There’s no previous experience required, and all abilities welcome.

Sally said: “Everyone is welcome to my portrait painting workshop. It’s taking place in a really gorgeous unique space in Preston at Chew’s Yard and I hope you will come to find that my workshop is unique too!
“You don’t need to feel concerned about coming with a certain skill level, everything you need to know will be taught and supported during the workshop. You will go away with a finished canvas painting ready to hang on your wall! After having had a really positive creative experience.”
Heritage Portraits with Artist Sally Dyer will last approximately two-and-a-half-hours between 11am and 2.30 pm on Sunday 18 May. Priced at £45, tickets are available from Skiddle.
