A POPULAR retail giant often compared to Target has confirmed it will open six new locations by September.

It comes as part of the company’s ambitious plans to bring 10 new spots to shoppers over the year, and even more beyond that.

The US Sun reported that Walmart is planning to build or convert 150 stores over the next five years.

President and CEO of Walmart U.S. John Furner said: “In the next five years, Walmart is planning to build or convert more than 150 stores, while simultaneously continuing our program to remodel existing stores.

“These efforts represent millions of dollars in capital investment of labor, supplies, and tax revenue, which benefit their respective communities,” he continued.

“And they’ll help us reach and serve even more customers.”

At least 650 stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico will also be remodeled, with 117 of these re-designed stores having opened in November.

That includes updated layouts from previous stores with new technology, expanded inventory, and more.

NEW STORES IN 2025

As a part of Walmart‘s plans, 10 of the 150 stores are set to be completed by the end of 2025.

These will be spread across Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas, and include Walmart Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, and a single Sam’s Club warehouse.

Now, we have the dates for six of those 10 stores opening, and they are happening very soon.

USA Today reports on the handful of new openings which will be staggered from next month to the start of autumn.

It is not known when the final four of the 10 will come, however, as this has not been confirmed by Walmart.

The six opening stores, as well as their 0opening dates, are:

  • Walmart Neighborhood Market – 8600 Hwy 69, Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Mid-June
  • Walmart Supercenter Conversion – 600 Showers Dr., Mountain View, California – July
  • Walmart Supercenter – 9399 North Spring Run Parkway, Eagle Mountain, Utah – August
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market – 6275 US-90, Milton, Florida – August
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market – 4239 Berryhill Road, Pace, Florida – September

Walmart operates over 4,600 stores in the US, along with over 600 Sam’s Club warehouses.

While retail is one of the most competitive industries in the US, many have dubbed Walmart better than one of its main competitors Target.

One shopper claimed on X recently: “Walmart has a better layout and merchandise selection than Target does,”

CHANGES AT SAM’S CLUB

Sam’s Club is undergoing some major changes of its own right now, and they aren’t being generally well received by shoppers.

The US Sun has revealed that members have vowed to walk away from Sam’s Club completely if it goes through with its plans to scrap self-checkouts in favor of Scan & Go.

This would see shoppers forced to scan the items themselves as they go round the store and then go through AI scanners before leaving.

But customers are not happy at all with this policy switch.

What is Walmart's Scan and Go?

Walmart's Scan and Go was made to save time for shoppers

Walmart’s Scan and Go system was created to help customers scan items as they shop, pay, and leave without waiting in long checkout lines.

The retailer describes the new system to be done in a few easy steps:

  • Customers first need to have the Walmart app downloaded on their phones with their location access enabled.
  • On the Store Mode landing page, shoppers must click the Scan and Go option.
  • Customers can scan each item and place them in their carts as they shop.
  • At the end, they’ll be prompted to view the cart to make sure the quantity on the app matches the ones in their carts.
  • Shoppers will press “Check Out” and head to a self-checkout kiosk.
  • They’ll be prompted to scan the provided QR code at the register and confirm their payment method.
  • Once the transaction is complete, shoppers can leave the store without worry.

One shopper wrote online: “The “NEW” system for check out at Sam’s Club is ridiculous.

“Completely out of touch with customer service. Won’t be renewing with them.”

And another added: “You can’t check out at any registers… all are closing.

“You have to use the app and scan your stuff and pay online.

“They have people that check online to see if you “missed” anything! No customer service anymore!”
