A senior Tory launched an astonishing attack on Liz Truss’ disastrous mini-Budget, despite lavishing it with praise at the time.

Chris Philp took aim at his former boss as he criticised Reform UK’s spending plans.

Philp was chief secretary to the Treasury during Truss’ 49-day spell as prime minister.

Just hours after the tax-slashing mini-Budget, when the value of the Pound briefly went up, Philp tweeted: “Great to see sterling strengthening on the back of the new UK Growth Plan.”

Shortly afterwards, the Pound plummeted amid market turmoil.

Philp also gave the mini-Budget “9.5 out of 10”, claiming it would boost economic growth.

He seems to have now changed his tune, however.

On GB News on Sunday, he said: “Nigel Farage is very charismatic, he’s got great slogans, but he doesn’t have a plan.

“He wrote an article in the Mail yesterday which raced through a whole lot of ideas which would have cost £5 or £60 billion with no idea how to pay for them. Like Liz Truss on steroids. Now that is not going to help anyone.”

Presenter Camilla Tominey then asked him: “Is there anything wrong with Liz Truss on steroids? You’re now criticising Liz Truss? You served with her.”

Philp replied: “I’m just making the point that if you’re going to make promises to either cut taxes or increase expenditure, you need to have a credible plan t do that.”
