A SWAT team is locked in a stand-off with a man wearing a bomb vest after he allegedly said he shot his wife dead and opened fire on cops.

An unidentified 45-year-old exchanged fire with cops in Hyrum, near Salt Lake City, Utah, at around 7.15am on Sunday morning – and remains inside a house.

Police then returned fire and the situation quickly escalated into a stand-off.

A large cordon has been setup and neighbours evacuated as specially-trained officers navigate the potentially volatile situation.

The emergency response began when a man called police and said he had killed his wife.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said deputies arrived at the home around 5am.

The 45-year-old then allegedly opened fire on the officers, who took cover and urgently called in for a SWAT team.

The suspect is accused of then firing on the back-up when it arrived.

Negotiators arrived on the scene and were able to make contact with the man.

He later sent photos of himself wearing a bomb vest and explosives inside the house.

Authorities say no contact has been made for several hours – and the situation is ongoing.

The local Sheriff’s office has warned residents to “stay completely away” from the area.

Several local police departments also set up perimeters around the house.

Cops confirmed in a press release that there “appears to be explosives inside the house”.
