An NHS initiative, which remains successful in Lancashire and Cumbria, is set to invite Preston’s people for a lung cancer screening.

Hosted for Preston people aged 55 to 74, the screening is set out to check and monitor those who have ever smoked or are registered with a participating GP practice.

Since the programme launch four years ago in Lancashire and Cumbria, 106,000 people have been invited for screening with around 240 of those with an early stage of lung cancer.

Eligible individuals will receive an invitation letter through the post to show how to book an appointment where individuals will receive a consultation and might be offered a low-dose CT scan.

Dr John Howells, clinical director for lung cancer screening in Lancashire and South Cumbria said: “Following great success in Blackpool, Blackburn with Darwen, East Lancashire and Fylde and Wyre, we are delighted to now offer lung cancer screening to people in Preston and encourage everyone who receives an appointment to attend – even if they feel well.

“There are often no signs or symptoms of lung cancer at an early stage, which is why it’s often diagnosed too late to be cured.

“Thanks to screening, we are now seeing more people than ever before diagnosed earlier and successfully treated for lung cancer, often before any symptoms have developed.”

There are two upcoming events in mid-June, for people who wish to learn more about lung cancer screenings, with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

These are at Preston Market on Thursday (12 June) and Tuesday (17 June) and at St George’s Shopping Centre on Friday (13 June) and Wednesday (18 June).
