Preston is set for a weekend full of Windrush celebrations and remembrance.
Various events will take place in honour of Windrush Day, which is marked on 22 June each year and commemorates the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush in Britain in 1948, beginning a significant wave of Caribbean migration to the UK.
It’s a day to celebrate the contributions and cultural impact of the Windrush generation and their descendants, while also acknowledging the challenges they faced.

Festivities kicked off earlier today (Friday 20 June), when the Windrush flag was raised at Town Hall thanks to a collaboration between Preston Caribbean Carnival, Dominica and Friends Preston, and Preston Windrush Generation & Descendants.
The groups have also organised a day of celebrations at Unity Centre, which is next door to Jalgos Sports and Social Club in Rose Street, Avenham. Taking place on Saturday (21 June), the event will feature a steel band, elders remembrance, workshops and food.
On Sunday 22 June at 12.30pm, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Grimshaw Street will host Windrush Service & Remembrance.

From 12pm to 8pm, The Windrush Festival will bring all the colour, good vibes and soulful music of the Caribbean to Avenham Park. Visitors can expect live music and DJ sets, dancing, a cricket match, a selection of non-food stalls, children’s play area, and a wide selection of international cuisines including tastes of the Caribbean.
The Windrush Festival was established in 2013 as a family-orientated, multi-generational, cross-cultural festival. The celebration reaffirms Caribbean identity, history, and culture for the descendants of the Windrush generation and the wider community. It acts as a meeting space for friends, families, and communities to come together, share stories and remember the past.
