A woman in her 40s is in a critical condition after a three vehicle crash, which closed a major Melbourne freeway.

A 4WD towing a horse float, a car and a truck collided between Montague and Power streets.

The woman had to be cut from the wreckage after the horror crash in Southbank at 12.05pm.

A man in his 30s was also rushed to the Albert Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The truck driver was not injured, and no animals were hurt, police say.

All inbound lanes of the West Gate Freeway have now reopened.
