The family of a champion boxer from Preston have thanked the city for its outpouring of tributes following his death.
Paul Burke, from Ribbleton, passed away suddenly last month aged 58.
During his boxing career which peaked in the mid-1990s he held the British and Commonwealth lightweight and light-welterweight titles.
Burke went on to establish community training sessions in the city and acted as a personal trainer.
Blog Preston reported the news of his death last month and saw hundreds of comments and tributes from those who knew the ‘Earl of Preston’ as he was dubbed by friends and fellow boxers.
In a statement his family said: “We are overwhelmed with all the messages and tributes received.
“To us he was just Dad, son, brother and uncle.
“Even though this has been a massive shock for us all, we all take huge comfort in the fact he chose to be forever young and won his final battle.
“We know to a lot of people he was so much more and all the posts and messages are testament to that.
“A huge thank you to everyone from the bottom of our broken hearts. Goodnight champ reunited with your loving Mum and brother Martin.”

The funeral of Paul Burke is to take place on Thursday 7 August at 11.15am at The Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Farringdon Lane, Ribbleton. All are welcome at the service.
The Acregate Labour Club in Warner Road will open straight after the church service for a celebration of Paul’s life and refreshments are provided. The family will join the Acregate Club event after attending a private committal service for Paul following the church service.
A charity collection will take place at the funeral and the Acregate Lane celebration of Paul’s life in his memory.
