Amended plans have been submitted for a proposed new primary school in Whittingham – doubling the number of pupils.
Late last year, Lancashire County Council submitted its application to build the school as part of development being built on the former Whittingham Hospital site. It will stand on a plot bordering Henry Littler Way and St. Johns Drive, which was reserved for a school when the housing plans were given the green light.
That application requested permission to build a school for 210 and has yet to be determined – with a separate part of the council responsible for making the decision in due course. The submission had raised eyebrows as it had previously been agreed that the site would be home to two classes per year group at a total of 420 pupils.

In May, the need for that larger intake was made more apparent when the cabinet agreed to drop proposals to increase pupil numbers at Goosnargh Oliverson’s Church of England Primary School. That decision came in response to concerns over access, traffic and parking.
A new planning application has now been submitted and explains the proposal includes a “4 -11year old two form of entry (2FE) 420 place primary school, plus a 16 place SEN unit”.
It is hoped that the first intake of 60 pupils will take place in September 2026, initially via temporary accommodation.
A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council told Blog Preston: “We are exploring increasing the Whittingham school to a two form entry site to ensure we are meeting the demand for places in the area.”
