Preston City Mela to return to the Flag Market as it marks nearly 30 years

Preston Mela, hosted on Preston’s flag market, will return this Saturday (23 August).

Bringing sights, sounds and tastes of South Asia, the event will be held from 11am until 4pm.

The day is expected to be filled with live performances, interactive workshops, and food stalls to celebrate the city’s rich diversity.

Councillor Anna Hindle, cabinet member for culture and arts at Preston City Council, said: “The Preston City Mela is one of our most cherished cultural events, offering a joyful and inclusive celebration of our city’s diversity.”

“It’s a chance for families, friends, and visitors to come together, enjoy incredible performances, taste delicious food, and experience South Asian heritage. Preston is truly a special place, whether you live here or visit.”

The day will also feature performances from artists and groups including Jazzy J from 11am, Worldwise Samba Drummers at 11:15 and live Bollywood Band, Sahara, closing the event at 3pm.

Shreya Ghodke, co-chair Preston City Mela, said: “Preston City Mela isn’t just an event; it’s a celebration of the rich cultural tapestry that makes up our city and region.

“We’re proud to create a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to share, learn, and enjoy.”

Attracting thousands each year, the 28th anniversary of the event invites the community once again to turn up and enjoy the celebration of Asian culture.

What’s on when?

Main Stage timings:

From 11am – Jazzy J – Compere
11:15am – Worldwise Samba Drummers
11:30am – Preston Young Bollywood
12:10pm – South Asian Folk and Heritage Dances
12:30pm – Urooj Qwaal (Qwalli group)
1:30pm – Gidha by Kikli Dance Academy
2:10pm – Bhangracise Interactive Performance
3pm – Sahara (Bollywood Live Band)
There will also be roaming performances, including Punjabi mascots and the rhythmic beats of PR Dholis.
