A truck driver has died after his vehicle smashed into a retirement village in Queensland this afternoon.

The man in his 50s was travelling along James Street in Newtown, Toowoomba at 1.15pm when police said his vehicle collided with a Nissan X-Trail and then a unit block at an independent living village.

A woman who was inside the unit at the time was treated for shock.

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious truck crash.

Four people, who were travelling in the Nissan, were not seriously injured in the crash.

Forensic police have been tasked with investigating the crash.

Emergency services are expected to remain at the scene for several hours.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

James Street is a major road in the Toowoomba region near the Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre.
