Donald Trump was caught boasting to Emmanuel Macron about his relationship with Vladimir Putin on Monday.

The US president was near a microphone as he chatted to his French counterpart just before they held a roundtable meeting in front of the press.

Trump was hosting European leaders, including Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Keir Starmer, at the White House following his face-to-face with Putin in Alaska last Friday.

That meeting ended in failure as Trump extracted no new concessions from Putin and did not seem to bring the prospect of a peace deal any closer.

Trump even dropped his own plan to secure a ceasefire from the Russian president, and quite literally rolled out the red carpet for him in the States.

Macron and his allies subsequently flew to the US at the last minute to show their support for Ukraine out of fear Trump could push Kyiv into a bad peace deal favourable to Putin.

But the US president still seemed convinced that his face-to-face with Putin was a success.

As Trump told Macron about his plan to set up a trilateral meeting with himself and the two warring nations, he added: “I think he wants to make a deal for me, you understand that? As crazy as it sounds.”

Few people share Trump’s theory, especially as it’s widely believed Putin “won” their meeting in Anchorage having been welcomed in the States with open arms.

Just last week, the US president had threatened “severe consequences” for the Russian leader if he had refused to end the Ukraine war.

Trump appeared to completely forget during their actual meeting and instead claimed he and Putin had “largely agreed” on land transfers and security guarantees for Ukraine.

Ukraine has made it clear that giving up any of its sovereign land is a red line, because it would breach the country’s constitution.
