Police have seized copper cables worth R3-million and arrested five suspects at an unregistered scrapyard in De Deur, outside Vereeniging in Gauteng.
Provincial police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says the arrests follow a tip-off.
“A team comprising of Sedibeng infrastructure unit, Gauteng traffic wardens and private security companies discovered large quantities of copper cable and further seized homemade stoves, reportedly used to burn the copper and arrested five suspects.”
“It was later established that the suspects are undocumented foreign nationals and it was further revealed that the copper cable belonged to Transnet, which positively identified the cable. All five suspects will appear before the Vanderbijlpark court soon, on charges of possession of stolen infrastructure, dealing with second-hand goods without a license and contravening the Immigration Act. Police investigation continue,” adds Nevhuhulwi.
