Four flood warnings along the River Ribble at Preston remain in place after the city saw 12-hours of torrential rain.

At one stage 10mm of rain fell in the space of an hour according to the Environment Agency’s rainfall monitoring at the Moor Park observatory, a quarter of the 43.6mm which soaked the city during Saturday.

The flood warnings, in which the Environment Agency say flooding is expected, cover sections of the River Ribble in Penwortham, Fishwick Bottoms and Samlesbury as well as further upstream at Ribchester.

The River Darwen where it meets the Ribble also has a warning in place covering the Higher Walton area.

The river at London Road is continuing to run high although latest river levels show it falling from a peak of 4.27m in the early hours of Sunday (21 September).

Flooding at Croston Road in Lostock Hall left cars stranded under the railway bridge.

Flood alerts are also still in place for the River Lostock and River Yarrow at Chorley and the Lower River Douglas at Croston and Tarleton.

All flood alerts and warnings are due to be reviewed by 11am on Sunday morning as the city awoke to bright sunshine and calm conditions.

A spokesperson from the Environment Agency said: “Our teams worked throughout the night to clear grids and remove debris from our rivers, and were on standby to operate flood defences.

“Rainfall has decreased but we will continue to monitor the forecast and impacts on river levels.”

The rainfall will be welcome relief after a dry Spring and summer with the Brockholes Nature Reserve lake already looking in a much healthier condition.
