Preston could be hit by disruptive rain and thunderstorms, according to a new warning from the Met Office.

The warning, which is in place from 2am until 5pm on Thursday (4 September) states that most areas within the area, which includes Preston, South Ribble and Chorley, will see either ‘non-impactful rain or remain dry’.

But it adds that a few places could see 30-60mm in an hour which could be disruptive.

Potential issues include sudden flooding on the roads, delays to public transport, power cuts or homes and businesses flooding.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to move northeast across parts of England and Wales on Thursday. As showers progress northeastward they will become temporarily slow moving, leading to an increased chance of surface water flooding.

“Whilst the vast majority of places will have either non-impactful rain or remain dry, a few places within this area could see 30-60mm in an hour. Hail and lightning will be additional, possibly locally impactful, hazards.”

The Met Office is currently forecasting rain for most of the day on Thursday, although this is expected to clear up in the evening.

There will be light showers on Friday (5 September) which should turn brighter by lunchtime. Saturday will be clear and pleasant for most of the day.
