Limpopo schools record breakthrough in reading and maths

Funda Wande, in partnership with the Limpopo Department of Education, has announced major improvements in reading and maths among young learners across 30 schools in the province.

The results, released in Polokwane, show that Foundation Phase learners (Grades R–3) are gaining key skills in literacy and numeracy, marking an important step in addressing South Africa’s education crisis.

The study found that children improved significantly in letter sounds, word reading, and comprehension.

Maths skills also advanced, with Grade 1–2 learners increasing number recognition from 13.29 to 17.54 items per minute, and Grade R–1 learners rising from 5.38 to 7.68.

“This research doesn’t just give us numbers – it proves what’s possible when evidence, policy, and practice align,” said Sihle-Isipho Bikitsha, Head of Research and Development at Funda Wande.

At the event, 120 teachers and principals were honoured for driving classroom transformation.

“Today we celebrate not just data points, but the dreams and futures of thousands of Limpopo children,” said Phumi Nhlapo, CEO of Funda Wande. “These teachers and schools have proven that excellence in Foundation Phase education is not just an aspiration – it’s an achievable reality.”

The launch featured a panel discussion with teachers, education leaders, and literacy experts. Acting Deputy Director General Dr Simelane delivered the keynote address, pledging provincial support to expand the interventions to more schools.

Chief Directors Solly Mabusela (Curriculum) and Ntombi Mhlaba (Teacher Development) also committed to scaling the programme across Limpopo.

The study is tracking learners over three years, from Grade R to Grade 3, to guide future strategies. With Limpopo showing strong progress, Funda Wande says the model could be expanded nationally to strengthen early grade learning.

The two-day programme ends with school visits, where stakeholders will see the improvements in action.
