Staff absences at Eldon Primary School as it waits in limbo for academisation process to finish

A high number of staff absences at a Preston primary school means that Lancashire County Council is monitoring the situation.

Eldon Primary School, at Eldon Street in Plungington, has a number of members of staff absent as the school year begins.

This number has been reported as being nine but Blog Preston was told by the school’s Interim Executive Board that this is not accurate.

The school has been in flux since it was controversially rated as Inadequate following an Ofsted inspection in March 2024, with the report published after a delay in September 2024.

It was rated ‘Good’ in most areas but was marked as ‘Inadequate’ for leadership and management, which ultimately informed the school’s overall rating.

This began the process of academisation, where the school begins to be operated by a trust rather than the local authority, and it is understood that Star Academies will assume responsibility for the school in future.

But that process is not expected to be complete until November this year meaning the school is still being overseen by an Interim Executive Board with neither Lancashire County Council nor Star Academies having much direct involvement.

Headteacher Azra Butt recently returned to the school after a period of leave and Interim executive principal Dayle Harrison has departed, although will contribute to the school in an advisory capacity. The former deputy head has also left the school.

A letter from Catherine Wallace, chair of the Interim Executive Board, earlier in September to parents said: “As you are already aware Mrs Butt, has now returned to her post as the substantive Headteacher and we know she is looking forward to working with you all again.

“As a result, Mr Harrison, who has been serving as the Executive Principal during Mrs Butt’s absence, will no longer be in school in that capacity. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Harrison for his leadership, commitment, and the positive impact he has made during his time at Eldon.

“Although Mr Harrison will not be present on site, he will continue to work closely with the Interim Executive Board (IEB) to support a smooth transition as the school moves towards joining Star Academies. His ongoing involvement will ensure that this process continues with stability and clarity.

“We want to reassure you that the IEB remains fully active and committed to supporting the school community. As always, we are here for you and your children.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said: “The Interim Executive Board (IEB) is working closely with Eldon Primary School’s leadership to manage a number of staff absences and ensure continuity of learning and support for all pupils.

“We’ve put measures in place to minimise disruption and remain fully committed to maintaining high standards of education during this time.”
