Delays along a busy stretch of road between Preston city centre and Walton-le-Dale were due to a nearby gas leak.
Gas distributor Cadent said they had to put emergency works in place during Thursday afternoon.
It caused delays past the scene in Victoria Road close to the Capitol Centre with delays back to the Ringway junction with Preston Prison.

A Cadent Spokesperson said: “Our engineers responded to a report of a gas leak at a multi-occupancy building on Victoria Road yesterday afternoon.
“To access the pipe, we implemented temporary traffic management measures in the area. These have now been removed and there should be no ongoing disruption to the road.
“We’ve made the area safe, but we will need to return to the site in the future to carry out a permanent fix.”
Anyone who smells gas is urged to call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800111999.
