Following the opening of the upgraded Harris Museum, an enlarged family library and main library were installed into the space.

The movement of the library, from the temporary Guild Hall location, left the library to be located in the library adjacent to the pendulum.

Books have been woven into exhibitions throughout the museum and galleries, and the library itself includes a variety of literature to choose from.

Describing her full circle career turn, leading her back to where she started at the Harris, Christine said it was a perfect way to end her career.

She said: “I stayed here full-time for 13 years; it was so lovely, and it set me up for a library career.”

Owned and managed by Preston City Council (PCC), the Harris operates as a part of Lancashire Libraries for lending services to members.

Through the Harris Your Place project, Lancashire County Council’s Cultural Services teams have also been involved with refreshing lending stock throughout the library.

It supports the Harris team to provide library members with access to Lancashire Libraries’ digital resources and offering and delivering local history reference collections for the Harris’ quiet reading room.

Library user and Harris worker Dominic has worked at this Preston library for over 20 years.

He said, “In 2002, a job opportunity came up in the Harris Museum, and I have been here ever since.

“For the past three and a half years, whilst the museum was being redeveloped, we have had to run the library in the Guild Hall.

“It is nice to come back to the building and nice to see how it has changed since the last time we came here, and the library looks completely transformed.”
