Wonky Rocket Events, the team behind Preston’s own comic con, saw a change in leadership last year when the company was bought out by locals Myke and Emma Bell.

As lifelong fans of conventions and all things pop culture, the couple brought exciting energy to the team and revamped the previous efforts to host a comic con in the heart of Preston.

With that, 2024 saw Wonky Rocket host their first event in the 53 Degrees venue. 2024’s Preston Comic Con was a wonderful showcase of what was possible for this event.

And going into its second year, Preston Comic Con appears to have refined its process to make the entire experience much smoother.

With the success of the show last year, 53 Degrees provided more space and services with the Student Union building, bar, cafe, and restaurant all operating as part of the event, which helped to avoid congestion and provide essential amenities to guests.

This also allowed for Preston Comic Con to include some live entertainment from the incredible duo, The Jimi Henson Experience.

As a tribute act to the Muppets and their creator, Jim Henson, The Jimi Henson Experience was charming, fun, and thoroughly entertaining, with three live sets being performed throughout the day in the Student Union building.

Meanwhile, in the main venue, a range of vendors were trading everything from comic books to Pop figures, custom art prints, and even flavored rums.

This impressive range of traders delivered a wonderful and unique experience to guests looking to celebrate their favourite franchises and grab a keepsake from the event.

Beyond the music and the stalls, there were also a handful of special guests from film and TV. These guests were positioned around the main hall.

Among the lineup were Phil Fletcher and Hacker the Dog, who has recently been onboarded as the newest Blue Peter host, horror star Reece Ryan, Damon Driver who appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger and Game of Thrones, another GoT star and prominent video game voice actor Edward Dogliani, and Torchwood alumni, Kai Owen.

In addition, there were also comic book artists in attendance such as Tim Perkins, who has worked for major publishers like Marvel, DC, and 2000AD.

Perkins also hosted a special comic book workshop where attendees could learn from a master of their craft and improve their drawing skills.

Preston Comic Con also featured a number of replica props from famous franchises, as well as a handful of movie-themed cars, which provided plenty of photo opportunities for those in attendance.

With an incredible range of activities to enjoy and partake in, Wonky Rocket Events put on a wonderful local convention that has absolutely improved from their first outing.

Overall, Preston Comic Con is a delightful local event that is sure to delight fans of film, TV, comics, and fandoms in general. There is a great range of activities to enjoy for kids and adults alike, and the event makes an effort to cater to a broad range of needs and interests.

Wonky Rocket Events has yet to announce when the next show will take place, but I am certain it will be well-supported by the community, and I look forward to seeing what they do in the coming years.
