High-energy vintage dance community launching in Preston

A brand-new vintage dance community will set the floor alight when it launches in Preston later this month.

Jive Lindy North has been founded by Chris Shuttleworth, Mel Bedford and John Matthews to bring an inclusive, high-energy dance experience to the city, built on fun, connection and music.

The trio decided to create the community after finding themselves on the receiving end of harassment, bullying, intimidation and unwelcome behaviour at dance events.

The team’s mission is to create a safe space where they can introduce the feel-good music of the 50s to Lindy Hop dancers, and bring the cool footwork and playful moves of Lindy to the Jive crowd.

“We’re very excited to bring the styles and music of Jive and Lindy Hop dancing together,“ said Chris.

John added: “We want a space where everyone feels welcome the moment they walk in – a place where safety, kindness and fun sit right at the centre.

“Everyone is accountable in this community, from organisers to teachers to attendees. If anyone has a concern about anything, there is always someone to talk to about that without any judgement.”

The organisation is built around the S.T.E.P.S. Code of Conduct, which stands for Safety, Trust, Engagement, Prevention, Support, and is promoted by Safety In Swing Dance UK.

Safety Officer, Mel, is passionate about what the community represents.

“No one talks openly about negative incidents or how they are made to feel,” said Mel. “I’ve witnessed bullying, name-calling, and slander that damages people. It’s only when someone shares their experience that others say, ‘Who would I tell? Would anything get done?’

“This new community is about giving people somewhere they can dance freely, safely, and joyfully. Everyone is welcome, no matter their background or how they dance.”

Jive Lindy North aims to create a warm environment with a lively mix of 30s, 40s and 50s music. Well-behaved dogs, children, beginners, seasoned dancers, and anyone curious about vintage music are welcome at the events.

Chris said: “I don’t want the swing and jive dancing scene to die out, so we’re creating fun events that encourage younger people to dance. It’s a great source of exercise and community spirit, and the STEPS Code ensures no one is discriminated against.”

The team has run several small test events over the past year, and now the official Jive Lindy North launch will take place on Friday 28 November with events taking place simultaneously in Preston and Leeds.

The Preston event will take place from 7.30pm to 11pm at Preston Masonic Hall in Saul Street. Entry is £5, and there’s an introductory offer of free entry for students with ID.
