After 20 years, Kay has retired from her role as advertiser and introducing new residents into Preston’s Howard House.

The house, which looks after nine individuals, offers regular social events through both volunteers and workers.

Kay Gibson, a now retired volunteer at the house in Garstang Road in Fulwood, told Blog Preston that she first knew about Howard House over 25 years ago when her mother was a resident.

Kay, who lives in Fulwood, talked about the home and said: “I thought then it had a lovely, homely atmosphere which provided security for the residents and also two lovely meals cooked for them.”

In last month’s afternoon tea celebration, Fulwood’s sheltered housing also celebrated Kay’s husband, who joined once he retired from the police force.

Jim gave a helping hand with putting together furniture and took pictures of the home’s events.

To start her 20 year long career, Kay was approached in 2000 by the former Chairman of the Committee of the house to come onto the committee.

Since then, she explained the events and celebrations she has experienced while volunteering there. She said: “Over the years, there have been many events that I remember, one being one of our residents is reaching her 100 birthday with a party.

“We frequently have Bingo or Beetle drives, trips to Bowling, fish and chip lunches, and a trip to Boundary Mill is on the list.”

She continued: “Every other Monday evening we have games nights, of dominoes, carpet bowls, or quizzes, all arranged and organised by our chairman who keeps Howard House running smoothly.”

Kay added that she is still in touch with most of the Howard House workers and mentioned that she enjoyed all 20 years volunteering in Preston.
